Is he or isn’t he?

The rumor keeps popping up: Tom Cruise is moving to Warrenton.

Rumor number one, heard three weeks ago: WQRA “Sunny 94” radio announced that the star of “Top Gun,” “Rain Man” and the current box office hit “Days of Thunder” had bought Menlough, once the home of fellow actor Chad Everett.

Reporters don’t like to go immediately to competing media for their information.

Instead, for confirmation, this reporter tried to find a listener who had actually heard the news item broadcast. There were plenty of people whose neighbor’s best friend had heard the news on WQRA.

But when you track down the neighbor and then the best friend, it turns out the best friend’s cousin’s neighbor heard it. And so on.

Finally, the move you hate: ask the competing media. The answer from WQRA? A flat “No.”

And so it went, from rumor to rumor. They have grown in the past month from the mild (he went through the checkout line at Giant) to the wild (he appeared at Giant, was mobbed by a crowd of women and it they had to call the cops to free the poor man).

Charles Ebbets admitted two weeks ago that he may have started at least one of the rumors. He teased his daughter when she said she was not coming home for a weekend, as planned.
