People who plan to apply for Social Security retirement benefits or Medicare should start the application process about two months ahead of time, according to Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper.
Applying for benefits can be handled by telephone, Mr. Hundley said. Social Security’s toll-free phone number is 1-800-2345-SSA (1800-234-5772). The telephone representatives are available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. all business days.
