A week after Gov. L. Douglas Wilder’s address to Virginia, local officials are still waiting for answers about how the belt tightening in Richmond will affect Rappahannock County.

Following his statewide televised address last Thursday night, Gov. Wilder went before the General Assembly’s money committees Friday. On Monday, he travelled to Charlottesville to address the Local Government Officials Conference at the University of Virginia. News reports indicated he added few specifics to his plan to erase a $1.4 billion state budget shortfall.
County Administrator John McCarthy, who attended the conference, said that Gov. Wilder’s speech cast a gloomy pall over the gathering.
