person! Forget for a minute the ten commandments, the golden rule, and all the good to be learned from religion. Think instead about this most basic lesson that every child learns in Sunday school: If something is to your benefit (life after death, being bom again, salvation, or being seen in church), then by all means be a part of whatever pretense is necessary to achieve those benefits!
I do not for a minute mean to suggest tl](at the church does not perform sotme good and useful social services toi the community, nor that many of those involved in religion are not well intentioned.
What I am suggesting is that, in an effort to impose some moral discipline, we are in effect teaching our children that it is OK to accept ideas and deeds without questioning them, especially if they are put forth by some charismatic individual acting in an official capacity. Even if the supernatural events described in the scriptures are true (and we have no way of knowing whether or not they are), to pretend to embrace them without evidence, simply in one’s own self-interest is, it seems to me, at best shallow and disingenous.
