She said she is comfortable with the “whole language” approach to reading and writing being introduced to the elementary school because, although the name is different, she sees it as being essentially the same as the “language experience” approach that was stressed when she studied for her master’s degree in reading.

When asked how she and Principal Bernard Chesshir will divide the responsibilities of administering the elementary school, Mrs. Tupper said each will work in their areas of strength, but “most things will be a team effort. They will be done together jointly, and I am comfortable with that. For most decisions we will ask for the input of staff as well, and I am very comfortable with that.”

Mrs. Tupper said she was happy to find in Rappahannock now a good relationship between the Board of Supervisors, the School Board and the staff of the schools and noted that in the past the relationship had not always been good.

The Tuppers are now living with Mr. Tupper’s parents in Washington and are looking for a home to buy in the area.

“I am gratified to have the opportunity to serve the students and parents of the county, and I am excited about working alongside the fine staff of the public schools,” she concluded.
