At these times, visibility is often so poor that very few of the otherwise spectacular views can be enjoyed. Over 70 percent of the impairment is caused by sulfates, a type of pollution given off by the burning of fossil fuels, particularly coal.
Superintendent Wade has recently stated in interviews that, “We have a strong suspicion that decisions by people about whether to undertake a return visit to the Park may be influenced, at least in part, by what they could or could not see on their prior visit. When people seek an area to vacation, they look for clean air, hoping to leave air pollution problems behind. It stands to reason that if pollution continues to increase, visitors could be less and less inclined to come.”
The air quality advisory will give one of three ratings levels for ozone: low, moderate and unhealthy. The unhealthy rating will be posted if the national health standard of. 12 parts per million is exceeded. Visibility ratings relate to how far you can see and are given in ranges of 0-10 miles, 10-30 miles and 30 plus miles. These two ratings will be posted on signs along the Skyline Drive and on special displays in the two Park visitor centers once each day. Interpretive bulletins are also available on air pollution and impacts on human health and natural resources.
