A heightened public concern about air pollution in the national parks has triggered the development of a new air quality advisory program at Shenandoah National Park.
Superintendent J.W. Wade announced that the new program will start Aug. 22. The advisory will be similar to those broadcast on television in major cities. Information will be provided on the current level of ozone air pollution and visibility impairment.
Ozone is a poisonous form of oxygen that can damage both plant and animal tissue. In humans it irritates the pulmonary membranes, can cause coughing, sinusitis, chest pains and a general feeling of weakness. It also can aggravate asthma and other breathing disorders making attacks more frequent or severe. Many normally healthy people are particularly sensitive to ozone and can feel its effects at low levels of concentration.
Visibility is important to visitors to the Park. Being able to see clearly from the many overlooks along the Skyline Drive and wilderness mountaintops greatly enhances public enjoyment of this world famous national park. Visibility has deteriorated significantly during recent years.
