During the past few months the news has been filled with a rigorous and often rancorous debate over the arts.
The debate usually centers on public funding for the arts, and more specifically public money used for allegedly obscene art work and productions.
The debate began in earnest last year when the Corcoran, a highly respected Washington, D.C. gallery, scheduled an exhibition of photographs by the late Robert Mapplethorpe. Included in the exhibit were some photographs graphically depicting activity of a homosexual nature.
Under pressure, the Corcoran decided not to host the Mapplethorpe exhibit. Its director resigned, and the show was finally exhibited at the Washington Project for the Arts.
