Two issues concerning the National Park Service (NPS) in the 7th District of Virginia have attracted the efforts of U.S. Rep. George Allen.
In one case, he’s trying to get state-maintained roads that pass through Shenandoah National Forest deeded over to the Virginia Department of Transportation at no cost to the state.
The other matter: NPS wants to designate large portions of Culpeper and Fauquier counties around Brandy Station as eligible land for the National Register of Historic Places. Rep. Allen wants that designation to depend on a vote of the local boards of supervisors.
The road issue covers sections of state roads in Madison, Page, Albemarle, Augusta, Greene and Rockingham counties.
According to federal law, if the state takes land for roads out of a national forest, the state must reimburse the federal government with an equal amount of land.
“The state shouldn’t have to give land back to them, so we need an exception to the law," the first-term congressman said last week.
