Three Rappahannock County residents recently completed the 1992 Master Gardener Course conducted by the Fauquier and Rappahannock County Extension offices. They are Susan Rust of Flint Hill, Betty Price of Castleton and Sharon Pierce of Woodville.
The course covered 48 hours of training in horticultural topics, including botany, physiology, environmental effects on plant growth, macronutrients, micronutrients, soil composition, fertilizers, composting, basics of entomology, chemical pest control, pesticides, pathology, pesticides and the environment, sexual propagation, asexual propagation, pruning, fruits, interior plants, care of special plants, light requirements, vegetable gardens, irrigation, seeding, transplants, weed control, intensive gardening, brambles, grapes, strawberries, gooseberries, lawns, landscaping, flowers, and analysis of site needs.
The Master Gardener Program was created to provide consumers with up-to-date, reliable knowledge so they can enjoy and protect the value of horticulture in Virginia. Master gardening has also become a fun and useful volunteer activity that has given its participants a sense of community spirit, accomplishment, and intellectual stimulation.
Master Gardeners agree to volunteer an equal number of hours back to the Extension Service to help with their workload in horticulture in return for the training they receive. 4H'ers compete
Katie, Justin and Scotty Updike were among 50 4-H’ers who recently Competed in the Glen wood Park 4-H Livestock Show April 4 in Loudoun County.
Katie won a first in novice showmanship, a first in the junior yearling Angus heifer class, and her Angus heifer was reserve champion.
Justin won first in summer yearling Angus heifer, second for exotic steer, and grand champion Angus heifer.
Scotty won second in the junior yearling Angus heifer class, first in British cross steer (summer yearling), first in British cross steer (junior yearling), champion British cross steer, and reserve champion British cross steer.
In addition, all three showed one heifer in the grand champion county
