Over one-half of the current seventh grade class at Wakefield School in Marshall participated in the 1992 CTY (Center for Talented Youth) Search sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University. The purpose of the search is to seek 7th grade students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning aptitude and then provide them with a variety or opportunities that challenge the young students to excel.
To participate, the students must already have scored at the 97th percentile on nationally standardized achievement tests. Students then register to take the SAT. CTY points out in its bulletin that the SAT is a difficult test designed primarily for college-bound students. In the 1992 Search, over 41,000 7th grade students nationwide took the SAT under the auspices of the CTY.
