than public safety, it has a greater impact on county taxpayers because it is all local money. This category covers trash collection, the operation of the county landfill, and maintenance and improvements to county buildings in the courthouse complex.
At a budget work session, chief magistrate Fran Eldred said that the offices in the first floor of the Rappahannock Courthouse have little or no heat in winter. County Administrator John McCarthy said he would try to find money in this portion of the budget to make improvements to the heating system during the coming year.
Health and welfare involves more money than appears in the county budget. The state’s share of the Virginia Department of Health budget isn’t included. Also, several Social Services programs don’t show in the county budget. Food stamps, the largest such program, doesn’t appear in the county budget except for the cost of administration.
General government administration includes the cost of the Board of Supervisors, the county administrator, the Commissioner of Revenue’s and Treasurer’s Offices, election officials and the registrar.
