Carolyn Reeder is a part-time resident of Rappahannock County who spends many weekends with her husband at their “mountain house” in Harris Hollow and enjoys hiking in Shenandoah National Park. She will give a talk for kids at 8 p.m. June 5 at the Rappahannock Library.
Mrs. Reeder’s most recent book for young people, “Grandpa’s Mountain,” is set in the 1930s in the area that is now the park. Condensing years of events into a single summer, the book tells the story of the coming of the park and the eviction of the mountain families from the viewpoint of its fictional heroine, 11year-old Carrie.
“Shades of Gray,” Mrs. Reeder’s first book for young people, takes place just after the Civil War. Twelve-year-old Will Page, filled with hatred of the Yankees, leaves Winchester and comes to Culpeper County to live with relatives - including an uncle who had refused to fight for the South. “Shbdes of Gray”
