Former governor Linwood Holton received the 1992 Outstanding Virginian Award at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center near Chester Gap on Saturday. Gov. Holton, 68, who served as the state’s chief executive between 1970 and 1974, was credited with changing the state’s political landscape as the first Republican to be elected to the office since the Civil War.
Gov. Holton who lives in McLean, said, “The whole theme of my campaign was to create a two-party democracy in Virginia. I grew up under the domination of one faction of one party and they were all powerful. I helped break that. We have a two-party, competitive situation now so that the people can have a choice.”
He said he had run for many offices prior to entering the gubernatorial race, but the governor’s seat was the first state office he won.
