Wakefield

soccer team

ends season

The girls’ soccer team at Wakefield CDS in Huntly opened its season with a challenging match against Seton, the toughest team in the Delaney Conference. After this initial defeat, the young team, playing with enthusiasm and only four experienced players, came out in their second game with a win against Tara Reston.

Though the team then suffered four losses, they practiced with determination through the chilly, wet spring. Their improvement was notable in their last three games. On April 30 the Owls beat a big RMA team, 2-1 and on May 2, they defeated Brentsville High School, 2-0. Their final and most exciting victory came on May 5 when they shut out Wakefield-Marshall, 3-0.

The Wakefield CDS team has been ably led by senior Caroline Brandt, who has scored six goals this season. Detra Funk, a senior from Front Royal, has been the tireless and courageous goalie, and senior Kathleen O’Neill, also from Front Royal, has added inspiration and one goal to the effort.

The other scores this season were kicked by Bridget Hickson five, Katie Adamson four, and Kristin Hickson one, all from Front Royal.
