Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly announced winners of classics awards at the school this week.
Detra Funk, Samara Sargent and Kathleen O’Neill, the school’s Greek II “Odyssey” class, received a first-place award in the National Greek Exam sponsored by the American Classical League and a second-place award in the National Greek Exam sponsored by the National Junior Classical League.
The three seniors received certificates and ribbons for the achievements during a school assembly May 6.
The girls scored 34-40 out of 40 on the tests.
Welby Lynn was the school’s top scorer on the National Latin Exam in March, with a score of 36 out of a possible 40. She was awarded the maxima cum laude silver medal in Latin II.
Andrew Nilan, Aram Kalpakgian, Nick Konick and Tim Inglis scored 30-32 for the magna cum laude certificate. Scoring 27-29 and receiving the cum laude certificate were Mary Pat Hickson, Matthew Kravitz, Matthew McCurry, Sandeep Ranade, Daniel Logie and Oliver Culley.
The Wakefield CDS students taking the test were among 77,000 worldwide.
Also, seventh-grader Andrew Nilan won second in the Latin 1 middle-school division of the Classical Essay Contest sponsored by the Classical Association of Virginia. The topic of this year’s essay was “Along a Roman Road.”
