to aid needy
over holidays
County Social Services ‘will again be collecting non-perishable foods and financial contributions to make up baskets for needy Rappahannock families for the holidays.
Office Manager Marie Davis said this year the department hopes to put together 65 baskets. Last year 60 were filled, but Mrs. Davis said, “The need is greater this year. All our rolls have increased.”
Mrs. Davis said some people ask to take care of a family. The department is happy to comply, but people wanting to do this must realize that social services cannot give out the name of the family receiving services. The department will supply information on the composition of the family, the ages and sexes of the children.
She said money contributions are especially appreciated. In some cases when the department has the funds, they can call local stores and arrange for the parents to shop there for toys for their children.
Money is also used to buy perishable foods for the baskets. For those on special diets, the funds can be used to buy suitable foods. Mrs. Davis pointed out that the state does not contribute towards Christmas baskets for the needy, and if this program is to continue, local people must support it.
Mrs. Davis said she hopes all contributions can be turned in by Friday, December 18, giving the department some time to complete the shopping.
She said the department is very appreciative of the help it received from the community last year, and she hopes this year’s drive is equally successful.
