the delegates at the convention approved language supporting the existing five year “rollback" provision. The farmers oppose any attempts to increase the “rollback” period to 10 years.
The increase, according to the Farm Bureau, constitutes an "undue tax burden on farmers."
Virginia Farm Bureau Federation communications director Gregory K. Hicks said that the policy provisions at the convention help farmers educate the legislature about the needs of family farms.
Although he could not gauge the success of past policy initiatives, he did say that the Farm Bureau has been successful in the past getting its initiatives through the General Assembly.
“We’ve been generally successful in getting at least part of what we ask. It’s difficult with shrinking rural representations," Hicks said.
“Fewer legislators understand the plight of farmers. We need to make sure our city cousins understand our issues," he said.
