RICHMOND — The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation elected a slate of officers and tackled some controversial subjects last week during its 67th annual convention in Richmond.
More than 800 farmers and their guests gathered Monday through Thursday at the Richmond Marriott for the annual convention.
The 270 Farm Bureau delegates considered a pair of initiatives one of which would have given younger Farmers’ Committee members a voting seat on the board of directors, and the other which would have limited the terms of board members. Both measures failed to gain majority support.
The delegates re-elected president C. Wayne Ashworth, vice president Bruce L. Hiatt, women’s committee chairman Helen B. Neese, and four board members: William P. Freeman, of District 3; John M. Richman, District 6; Robert E. Speas, District 9; and S. Spottswood Taliaferro Jr., of District 12.
The bulk of the work at the convention was spent, first in caucuses and then in actual consideration of and voting on policy issues for which the membership will lobby both the General Assembly and U.S. Congress.
Top priority issues for the 35,000 member organization include deer management. Extension Service funding and land use taxation.

Producers are encouraged to file wool sales receipts by Jan. 31, 1993, so that these receipts can be included in the national average marketing price. The 1992 wool marketings will be supported at $1.97 per pound. A comparitive support rate for unshorn lamb sales will be applied.
Wool producers are subject to payment limitation and payment eligibility rules. Wool producers have 15 days after filing the first sales receipts for a marketing year to file a person determination form. Wool producers must also certify that they are in compliance with highly erodible provisions.
