Fourth grade
takes hike,
studies plants
Mrs. Gaines’ fourth grade class participated in a Nature Hike to examine different conditions under which plants grow. They are also growing lima beans to experiment with growth conditions.
Ms. Brandt’s class has used miscroscopes to examine bone tissue. They also acted out the wild scene of predators and prey.
Mrs. Wolfe’s class used measurement skills to bake bread and find out what yeast could do for flour and water. They also compared the growth of yeast with sugar, with com syrup and without any food.
Later they compared the growth of mold on their “school baked” bread with that of mold on store bought bread.
Of course, the best part was eating the bread. Watch for the recipe in our school newspaper, which we are putting out with the sixth graders in December.
On Nov. 24 the entire fourth grade celebrated the “First Thanksgiving.” Essays were written about “What Thanksgiving Meant to the First Virginia Colonists.” Winning Essays were read and awards were given. Amanda Sims won first, Kenneth Robinson won second place and third place went to Aaron Price. Honorable Mention went to Steven Clark, Jeremy Slack, Amber Welch, Samantha Breeden and Dana Caldwell.
The fourth grade rs have had the opportunity to learn keyboarding skills.
In an attempt to help children re'alize that giving can be as rewarding ; as receiving, a Christmas food drive "has been organized at the elemen;t4ry school.
