Office shuffle: round 2
The supervisors continue to play three-card monte with Office space. The latest shuffle is to move the magistrate’s office out of the courthouse and into a garage.
To that end the supervisors have agreed to purchase a 500-square foot garage next to the jail at the corner with Mount Salem Avenue from Virginia Lindstrom for the tidy sum of $12,500.
The structure is not in the greatest of shape to put it mildly. Several years ago the foundation along one wall began to shift so the owners cobbled the mess together with flanges and reinforcing rod stretched across the floor. The interior Studs are fished together out of scrap lumber.
Before the building can be used by the magistrates, the supervisors will have to solve a few problems. First on the list is rezoning. The garage is in a village residential zone, where County offices are excluded. Second is approval by the town’s Architectural Review Board. Third is sewage. Any bathroom will have to be hooked to the courthouse’s already taxed system.
After these hurdles have been cleared, then a new interior can be constructed inside the existing shell.
m The complete plan is to move the magistrates out of the courthouse and into the garage, then move the Registrar somewhere, perhaps to the back of the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office. Once the shuffling stops, there will be room on the first floor of the courthouse to spread out the office of the District Court, and free up space for a conference room or two. ». No one is guessing how much all this will cost, but the jtotal will be a lot closer to $20,000 than $12,500. It seems a lot Jto pay for so little space. Like the proposed addition to the Elementary school, this is a short-term solution. Both plans waste money.
