Co-captains Lori Paratore, a senior, and Shannon Walter, a junior, are both “hitters,” he explained. They are able to spike the ball at the net. The coach is pleased that with his starting lineup he will always have at least two players at the net who can spike. Other starters are freshman Laura McNear, senior exchange student Sari Pelliman, senior Susan Payne and senior Alice Reeve.
Morgan Hay, a senior and Stephany Dove, a junior, are two substitutes who are expected to see a lot of action. Rounding out the team are seniors Heather Rossiter, Daphne Atkins, and Laura Pendleton, and junior foreign exchange student Kayoko Minouri. He expects all these girls to play some.
Coach Paratore said he expects Page, Central and Strassburg to continue as the powerhouse teams in the district. ‘They are always the top three, and everybody else battles for fourth.” he said. Last year, Rappahannock’s team won that fourth place spot. “They play at a level above the other teams,” he said. “Our goal is to break into that top three.”
This is Coach Paratore’s third year coaching Rappahannock girls’ volleyball. “Everyone says it takes four years to build a team,” he said.
He has coached the junior varsity as well as the varsity teams. This year there is a separate stipend for the JV coach, and he said he had hoped someone else would come forward to coach the JV. When no one did, he agreed to coach the JV again. “I couldn’t just let the program drop,” he said. He had 40 girls showing up for the two teams and had to cut to 12 on each team.
“The JV is very good,” he said. “The majority are sophomores who have been working together for three years. They are a good bunch of girls who work very hard. ” ;
