Is there anyone who doesn’t like eggnog? This comforting beverage seems to hit the spot with every age group. Perhaps it’s the creamy texture we most enjoy. Or, is it the soothing flavor that goes so well with so many foods? Then, again, it might be simply a feeling that eggnog evokes, a celebration feeling that rekindles warm memories of the holiday season and all the holidays mean to us.
Whatever our reasons for cravihg eggnog, it's comforting to know that it’s easy and entirely safe to prepare eggnot at home. While eggnog made with raw eggs is not currently recommended, the rich, creamy eggnog made from a stirred custard base reaches a temperature high enough to kill any potential bacteria which might spoil holiday fun. The only “secrets” to prepared cooked eggnog are low heat, a heavy saucepan and constant stirring. When the custard is done, it will coat i inetal spoon. That’s your cue to remove the custard base from the neat, stir in milk and refrigerate the mixture for a thorough chilling.
Just before serving, stir in a flavoring or add a garnish, if you like. Children might enjoy a fruit-juiceflavored nog or a candy-cane stirrer.
