In federal elections individuals are limited to $1,000 donations per election cycle and corporations • are prohibited from giving, although the use of political action committees creates, enormous loopholes in the system.
While Wilder was the beneficiary of Kluge’s contributions four years ago, Coleman himself got large sums from a wealthy Northern Virginia developer. Traditionally candidates for statewide office in Virginia have dipped into the deep pockets of individuals and groups who want to be fondly remembered later should they win.
Making those pockets a little less deep is now a matter for legislative decision. The question is whether the public will care enough to insist that the system be changed.
