Robertson has his own definition of who is a Christian. His ‘Christian Coalition’ was largely responsible for the election of seven right-wing Virginia state senators in 1991, defeating Democratic incumbents. It chose 300 delegates to the GOP convention in Houston. The press has reported that in each of 20 states, the Coalition has a chapter in every county.
It is relatively easy in an off-year election, and especially in a mass meeting, where low turnouts are typical, for an organized group of dedicated persons to run a stealth campaign by word of mouth and take the public by surprise. The coalition is working nationwide to take over local governing bodies, school boards and Republican committees.
Virginia voters have opened up a new opportunity for this effort by authorizing 42 elected school boards across the state. We can look forward to Virginia becoming a battleground for control of the public schools and the education of our children.
