BLACKSBURG - What is one of the sweetest selling items of the '90s, with sales increasing more than 20 percent in the last five years to $112 million a year?
It’s plain, old-fashioned (10,000 years worth of old-fashion) mouthpuckering, vinegar..
Counting industrial sales, vinegar has become a half-billion-dollara-year business, according to the Wall Street Journal.
And Morton Research Co. Mer,rick, N.Y., reported that last year vinegar imports totaled $17.6 million, up from $9.7 million in 1989.
Heinz even plans to market a 50 percent stronger “super vinegar.” And it will have the endorsement of Heloise - whose handy hints often include vinegar.
Frank Armstrong of National Fruit Product Corp. in Winchester said their White House brand vinegar is very popular among consumers from Pennsylvania to Florida and as far west at Texas.
“We get numerous calls asking us to print newly discovered personal or household uses,” he said. “But we tell people we provide vinegar for use with food products.”
Mr. Armstrong said Virginia’s vinegar and apple industries are complimentary.
“We rely on Virginia apples for . our apple cider vinegar and our vinegar industry provides a use for smaller apples that can’t be sold as eating or slicing apples,” he said.
The market provides yet another outlet for apples grown here in Rappahannock county.
