The surveys have consistently shown JMU freshman to be above average high school students. Between 43 and 49 percent have ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes.

But there has been a gradual rise in the percentage of “A” average students entering JMU. In 1984, 29 percent of the entering freshman had “A” averages in high school; 1987’s percentage was 35; and this year’s freshmen class was 42 percent.

Paralleling that trend, the percentage of freshman with SAT socres of 1,200 or above has risen from 14 percent in 1984 to 22 percent this year.
