By BRUCE SLOANE
Joy looked up from the floor where she was trying to tape an oversized ribbon to a red and green package. Christmas was coming to Shirt Tail Hollow. Uncle Fred, Aunt Suzanne, and Earl were settled into their new home, just upstream from Joy and her mother Clovis.
As everybody gathered in Clovis’ living room to wrap presents, the tantalizing aroma of Christmas pies and cakes filled both houses and most of the Hollow.
“We have so many trees around here,” Joy said, “why should we buy a Christmas tree? Let’s cut our own!” She glanced at Earl who looked at her blankly. She gently kicked him to get him to agree.
“Yea,” he said without enthusiasm. Joy kicked him again, harder. His enthusiasm increased markedly. “Oh, yeah! That’s a great idea,” he said, with one eye on Joy. “That’s terrific,” he added, glancing at Uncle Fred to get his father’s approval.
Uncle Fred agreed. Why don’t they cut two trees - one for each family?
So Earl, Joy, and Uncle Fred put on their coats, picked up the ax and saw from the tool shed, and headed uphill into the woods. A light snow was starting to fall, dusting the bare ground with a delicate frosting of white.
