Among other options that may be open for Vint Hill, Allen said in his letter, is a transfer of replacements into Vint Hill when and if the soldiers of the 201st leave.
“Fort Belvoir, for example, is scheduled to have several administrative units transferred in,” he told Warner. “This will require capital improvements to accommodate the new personnel. Consideration should be given to moving these units to Vint Hill which will have space-available.”
The transfer of personnel into Fort Belvoir is not set in stone, according to Allen spokesman Rick Richardson. “A second-hand source indicated that... there was a consolidation that was going to take place that would have brought a lot of administrative types to that area, and for which there would have to be some improvements made to the facility to house them,” Richardson said.
“That is really just an example of the kind of things that might be done to utilize Vint Hill to its full capacity. That’s obviously not the only thing that our colleagues can look at,” he said.
It is important to keep Vint Hill filled with Department of Defense personnel, Richardson said, because “the real risk is having Vint Hill under-utilized, just sitting out there exposed for review,” and possible closure.
“It is purely conjecture ... that this would move Vint Hill back on the list,” Richardson said, “but it obviously is the kind of thing that gets you on the list.”
But Warner did not seem overly concerned with the prospect of Vint Hill’s closing. “Right now — and even before this — Vint Hill is of a size that it was largely discretionary with the Secratary of the Army [whether it closes or not]. It is of a size that could be closed any old time," Warner said.
Early this week, Sutton said that the Army would like to obtain a decision on the troop transfers early next year. “If we can obtain approval ... we would hope to have all of that completed before the end of the fiscal year,” on Sept. 30, he said.
