Elementary Assistant Principal Raye Tupper said she could remember when class size was larger. “I’d hate to think of our class size growing because there is not enough space," she said. “The teachers are making do. The central issue is the learning conditions for the children.”
David Van der Graff, who tea.cher drug and alcohol prevention and runs the in-school suspension program said that the two spaces available for him in the schools are closet size. He said the schools would like to make more use of his services but can’t because of a lack of space.
Speaking as head of the local teachers’ organization he said he had the signatures of 26 teachers in support of a building program and a letter from special education teachers at the elementary school saying that their crowded divided classrooms and modular units are disrupted by children who have to pass through one room to enter another.
Roger Flinchum said he was the high school teacher without a classroom. He said he taught American History in an earth science lab and in a math classroom. “I volunteered for this because I thought it was a temporary thing,” he said.
Aney Massie, elementary school librarian asked for more storage space for the library. “We have an excellent library with a lot of resources, but students can’t get to the bookshelves Without moving machinery,” she said.
