The George Washington National Forest’s efforts to provide access for disabled hunters this season appears to have been successful.
“We plan to do it again next year,” Forest Supervisor Wayne Kelly said. “Everything we have heard is positive.”
To provide access for disabled hunters, the forest opened some previously closed backcountry roads.
On the Pedlar Ranger District, the Shady Mountain area in Amherst County was open to qualified disabled hunters from the beginning of squirrel season in October and will remain open to the end of bear season on Jan. 2, including muzzleloading and archery seasons. It will also be open during spring gobbler season.
The Pedlar district issued 14 permits.
