approved hiring Beth Swindler to teach sign language to a deaf preschooler. Mrs. Swindler will work three hours a day. That is another unexpected expense
Also Monday night the board adopted a policy to deal with "bloodborne pathogens” that may cost as much as $4,800. The new policy is required by OSHA to deal with the risk employees face of contacting Hepatitus B by accidently coming into contact with it as a result of an accident. Most of the funds will go toward innoculating 30 employees considered most at risk.
Dr. Gangel said there had also been unexpected mechanical problems. “I’m watching it very carefully,” he said.
At Monday’s meeting the board also tentatively approved a plan to build a “pirate ship” for playground equipment. Peter Kreyling and Jonathan Neill-Dore offered to build the ship as a donation to the PTO.
Dr. Gangel said he would show the plans to the school’s insurance agent to see if there were any problems. Mr. Kreyling said he had built the castle at the recreation center. They said they wanted to place the ship near the present fort and to build benches for teachers to watch the children while they are using both pieces of equipment. They said they did not know where they would build it if the board plans to expand the elementary school in the direction of the playground.
