and death in gypsy moth caterpillars as early as next year. This fungus is native to Japan and was introduced into the United States in the early 1900s.
The fungus caused major disease outbreaks in gypsy moth caterpillars in the Northeastern United States in 1989 and 1990, and in the George Washington National Forest in 1992.
Although the fungus is relatively species-specific, it also may kill some species of native moths that are closely related to the gypsy moth.
The release sites would be along Shenandoah Mountain on the Dry River and Deerfield Ranger Districts west of Harrisonburg and Staunton, Va.; along North Mountain and Massanutten Mountain on the Lee Ranger District west and east of Interstate 81; and along the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Pedlar Ranger District in Amherst and Nelson counties, Va.
This fungus release project follows a two-year study in 1991-92 where the fungus was released and recovered from gypsy moth caterpillars at 13 sites on the forest. Rates for fungal infection of collected gypsy moth caterpillars at the release sites ranged from 25 percent to 85 percent.
