In its assessment, the Army found that the move would have “no significant impact." The proposed troop relocation is available for review and comment until Jan. 11, after which the Army will study the comments and pass on its recommendation to the Secretary of the Army for a final decision, according to Vint Hill commander Col. Rick Davis.
In a written statement issued this week, Davis added that, “as our Army reshapes and realigns itself to meet changing threats to world peace, the Vint Hill Farms community takes pride in the fact that the 201st Military Intelligence Battalion is apparently in the forefront of the Army’s planning.”
In addition to changing threats, public affairs officer Paul Sutton said that the proposed move is related to key lessons learned during Operation Desert Storm.
“There are better ways to cause your supporting intelligence element to support the element that it’s with, that it’s supporting,” Sutton said of those lessons.
“The 513th is the supporting element for the United States Army CINCOM [Central Command]. The truth of the matter is, you just don’t go to war and have success.” Sutton continued. “You have to put all of those working relationships into place beforehand.
“With the Army’s central command down south, at McGill [Air Force Base] Fla., the Army feels that there would be training and efficiency gained by having its primary intelligence unit located closer to the element it supports,” he said.
“As we looked at Desert Storm lessons learned, and as we looked at drawing down the people we’ll have ... a smaller, more forward deployed, ready-to-go force, we think that there are efficiencies obtained by having the 513th closer to the Central Command, and when we looked at the various locations, it looked like Fort Gordon offered potential opportunities that would be in our advantage,” Sutton said.
Fort Gordon is located in east central Georgia, approximatedly nine miles from Augusta.
But while Vint Hill commander Davis talked of the possible deployment with pride, he was also able to tip his hat to the other side.
“At the same time, we recognize and appreciate the concern which many of our neighbors may have about the proposed relocation,” Davis said in his statement, and many local observers list a reduction in the $30 million overall military payroll,
