The Rappahannock varsity basketball team, playing at home for the first time this season, soundly defeated the Luray Bulldogs Saturday night. The final score was 62-48.

The Junior Varsity game was decided after the final buzzer had sounded as Rappahannock, ahead by two points, fouled at the buzzer. The Luray player went to the line and made his first shot; then he missed his second shot giving the Panthers the victory, 45-44.

Through the final quarter Andre Fletcher kept the junior varsity team in the game with his performance at the foul line. He made five of six shots in the last minute of the game.

In the varsity game,the Panthers were up by only five points, 44-39, after three quarters and the Luray squad was still very much in the game. Rappahannock Coach Gary Leake told his players during the timeout between the quarters that he wanted eight minutes of intense, . focused basketball.

Guard Kevin Joliffe, a senior, helped the team keep its composure as he sank went five for six from the foul line, two of them coming with two minutes left in the game.

Those two shots pushed the score to 51-45 and he added another two points seconds later by driving the length of the court, weaving through a tightly packed Luray defense to score a layup. The Bulldogs lost heart when that layup went through the hoop.

Forward Michael Williams scored the last of his 20 points 30 seconds later to make the score 5545 and put the game out of reach. Williams also added 19 rebounds to the team effort.

The Panthers had opened their season the preceeding week in Luray with a disappointing loss and Coach Leake was pleased with the effort his team expended in the rematch.
