According to a statement that his office released Dec. 9, Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., has been working behind the scenes for months to “strengthen Fort Gordon’s position as the Defense Department prepares for another review of potential base closures.”
Unfortunately, Fort Gordon’s increasingly strengthened position may come at the expense of Vint Hill Farms Station, for the Army is considering a plan to transfer 381 soldiers of the 201st Millitary Intelligence Battalion from Vint Hill to Georgia, in a consolidation with the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade that could take place as early as next fall.
In addition to the 381 transferees, the move may eliminate 37 military and 30 civilian positions. Soldiers will be moved from other bases as well, according to a statement released by the Fort Belvoir Public Affairs Office.
“The 513th Military Intelligence Brigade will relocate from Fort Monmouth, N.J. and Vint Hills Farms Station, Va. to Fort Gordon, Ga. The 470th Military Intelligence Brigade will relocate from Panama to consolidate with the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade. With the addition of personnel from several smaller INSCOM units, the realigned assets at Fort Gordon will form a Military Intelligence Power Projection Brigade,” the release said.
