he said. Leake admitted he had been curious to see how the team would respond to the loss at Page County the night before.
“1 am very proud of every players’ contribution, whether on the court or from the bench,” he said. Besides Williams and Jolliffe, Coach Leake took care to point out the effort of Jason Settle and Ray Atkins.
Settle grabbed a career high 11 rebounds and Atkins came off the bench to score eight points and provide excellent defense on Luray’s leading scorers.
Speaking after the game, Leake was pleased with the team’s rebounding effort. “We led in rebounds by 14, which also was the scoring margin,” he said. The team also shot nearly 70 percent from the foul line with a 16 for 23 effort.
Friday night’s game at Page County was not as satisfying to Leake and the team. Ahead by 13 points with two minutes to go in the third quarter, the Panthers ended up losing the game 51-55.
One bright spot, however, was he performance of sophomore forward Jason Settle. He scored 26 points, including four of five shooting from beyond the three-point arc. "He had one of the finest offensive games of any player I have coached,” Leake said.
Turnovers and a lack of offensive spark from his starters were the primary causes of the loss, Coach Leake added. With two minutesto go in the third quarter and a 13 point lead, he gave his starting lineup a breather. The bench gave up nine points and scored none, allowing Page to cut the lead to four points when the quarter ended.
“When the starters came back at the beginning of the fourth quarter they did not respond to the challenge,” Leake said.
Another problem in Leake’s view was the team’s lack of offensive aggressiveness, which meant few trips to the foul line. “We shot only 10 in the game and made half,” he said. The Page squad shot 32 foul shots
