They brought the tree back in. It looked lopsided with a branch gone. Uncle Fred did more tree surgery - a little here, a little there. The tree still had gaps. He put the worst gap facing the wall. Sticky pine pitch, which looked so clear and clean as it oozed from the tree, was leaving black smears on hands, clothes, walls, and furniture. Clovis ran around cleaning up.
Finally the tree was set up to everybody’s satisfaction. Joy had already attached the angel holding the star to the top of the tree, and she was ready to trim it.
“How about OUR tree?” said Earl, forgetting about his shoe problem for the moment. “I want US to have a tree before we trim JOY’s tree.” Uncle Fred looked quizzically at Aunt Suzanne. She slowly nodded at him.
Uncle Fred said, “It’s too cold to go out and cut another tree. And maybe one Christmas tree in Shirt Tail Hollow is enough. Anyway, we have an artificial tree packed away someplace. It’s round and full, and doesn’t have any bugs or birds or other critters living in it, and no pine pitch. We’ll use that. Yes, we’ll use that.”
Aunt Suzanne smiled.
