They maneuvered the tree inside. The rich smell of pine and resin mixed with the cooking odors. When Earl and Joy tried to stand the tree up, they were surprised to find it was much too tall.
“That’s OK - we’ll just cut some off from the bottom,” said Uncle Fred. He sawed off a few inches from the base of the tree. The top of the tree was just below the ceiling. “We won’t have room for the angel,” Joy gasped in dismay. Uncle Fred sighed, and cut a few more inches off the base. Clovis cleaned up the sawdust.
They put the tree in the stand. There was just enough room for the angel and star. Joy, who was examining the tree closely, discovered a bird’s nest on an inner branch.
She was concerned that the birds would not have a home when they came back next spring. Would the birds find the tree in the house? Maybe they should put the tree back in the yard after Christmas?
As they discussed the bird’s nest, they heard an ominous humming. Earl, who had been trying to conceal the gash in his shoe from his mother, looked at another branch and screamed. The humming was coming from a hornet’s nest, and the insects were waking up in the warm house. Earl and Uncle Fred hastily took the tree outside. In the cold air the humming stopped. They cut off the branch with the hornets.
