Battle Run turns south after crossing Route 729 and crosses Route 618 between Laurel Mills and Route 729. The stream put a section of Routte 618 under more than five feet of water.
Although the Thornton did not wash across the highways at Sperryville, it was in full flood by the time it reached Rock Mills where it is joined by the Rush River. Both bridges at the intersection were covered by fast moving water as the two streams buried the low lying roads there.
Several families were trapped by rising water at the end of Route 646 near Viewtown, where a small creek came across the road and washed whole hunks of asphalt downstream.
The road was passable Thursday night only by the largest trucks and the highway department kept someone at the maintenance shed near Washington all night in case of an emergency, accordingto supervisor Ron Marshall.
The highway department reported problems with flooded and badly washed roads around Flint Hill and Huntly. Black Rock Road (Route 632) at the base of the mountain w^as washed out. Route 630 behind Foster’s Packing House was damaged as was Route 662 on both sides of U.S. 522 near Huntly.
One small success story must be noted. In previous floods. Route 614, a dead end road off Route 622 in Gid Brown Hollow, has been badly damaged by the Covington. Several years ago high water destroyed a bridge and several hundred yards of the road.
