• Eat more high-fiber foods — A high-fiber diet might reduce the risk of developing colon cancer. Highfiber foods include whole grain cereals and breads, legumes, vegetables and fruit.
• Cut down on total fat intake — A high-fiber diet increases the risk of developing breast, colon and prostate cancers. Total fat intake should be limited to 30 percent or less of total caloric intake.
• Limit alcohol consumption, if you drink — Heavy alcohol drinkers, especially those who smoke cigarettes, are at an increased risk for cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus and liver.
• Limit consumption of saltcured, smoked and nitrite-preserved foods — Cancers of the stomach and esophagus are more common among people who consume large quantities of these foods.
