If Wilder decides to run, and he has said he will decide by summer, his strategy will likely be twofold.
His first priorty will be to persuade state Democrat leaders to schedule, a primary. That would enable him to seek the biggest possible turnout of black voters, union members and other core supporters. If a convention were scheduled instead, Robb would probably have the advantage since the party activists who control local Democratic units would back him in larger numbers and help direct the delegate selection process.
The second part of the Wilder strategy, one he is already employing, would be to go on the attack against Robb in a big way.
