he said. The northern and southern sections of the park seem to have escaped major damage, he added. Damage to the trails and fire roads has not been assessed, Rives said.
“The Park was fortunate that there was only minor damage to one structure. At Big Meadows an employee’s residence was damaged,” he said.
“Our early estimate of damage is about $50,000. Fortunately there is a special Emergency Fund within the National Park Service that will help cover the cost,” Rives said.
“Pinnacles Picnic Area was especially hard hit. Trees are down throughout the area; picnic tables have been crushed. It will take weeks of work to clean it up,” Rives said.
“We will bring back some of our furloughed workers on March 15 and tell them to clean up, clean up, clean up!” Rives said.
