For the second year in a row, Michele May took first place in both arts reporting and dramatic criticism in the Michigan Press Women’s annual Communication Contest. The two arts awards topped a total of eight awards Miss May received during the MPW convention in Muskegon Feb. 19-22.
Miss May’s arts reporting entry in the 1992-93 contest included three stories: a feature about a rock music rehearsal, the story of a children’s opera company presenting an original play about racism and a diary of her own experiences acting in a play with Ron Pallilo, the TV star who created the role of Arnold Horshack in “Welcome Back, Rotter."
Miss May also took first place in special sections with a tabloid called “Today’s Woman.” She won second place in food writing, .religion writing and for a feature about two mothers who are working to prevent drunken driving after their teen-age children were killed in separate traffic accidents.
Her second place award in the special series category consisted of three articles about the opening of a new arts center at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich.
