county pays for electricity and one telephone at the shelter. RAWL picks up the cost of another telephone. The county also pays the animal warden’s salary. Mr. McCarthy estimated that the county’s payments are close to 50 percent of the cost for the shelter. He noted that some of RAWL’s expenses are for things not strictly related to the cost of operating the shelter. Mr. McCarthy asked RAWL to submit a budget request.
When the shelter was built, the supervisors were told the cost would be less than the cost of paying to board county dogs at a private kennel in Fauquier County. That has never been the case. The $400 per month payment to RAWL was approximately the same as the cost for boarding dogs in Fauquier, but RAWL’s expenses were higher than the payment, mainly because the organization keeps dogs longer trying to find adoptive homes for them.

Potomac Riverboat company will offer visitors a waterfront panorama of the monuments amidst the cherry blossoms, Monday, March 20 through Friday, April 2. Sailing times are 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.
