Francis Deng is also a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. “My jobs and circumstances have led me to stay in contact with my country’s tribal government, studying the problems of the tribe, acting in a mediation process with the warring factions. It was always expected that we would work in public service.” .
Francis Deng is a man of great charisma and international reputation. When asked what kind of welcome he receives when he returns home, Dr. Deng replied with humility, “It is phenomenal. I symbolize to Sudan the U.N.’s concern for them. There is joyous festivity, huge crowds. It is moving yet uncomfortable witnessing the conditions in which they now live. There is an element of hope and also pain.”
The reception in his own village, however, brings him much joy. “In my village I am in my own environment. The reception is less ambivalent. Joy prevails. Women are singing and dancing, there is much touching and great feeling as you move through the people.”
