After working for Giant Foods in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. for 34 years, Charles Burke wanted to do something-different. Now he is managing the F.T. Valley Grocery on Route 231.
Before coming to Rappahannock County, he was living in Seabrook, Md., near Lanham. His wife, Jeanette, still lives there but she gets down to Rappahannock to see him on the weekends.
“She has 16 more months until retirement but she is working a four day week, ” he said.
“I have wanted to come back to the country for years,” Mr. Burke said. “I was born and raised in Front Royal; I went to school there.”
“After all those years it was time to get out of the city and go back home.”
He is now leasing the property, which includes the store and adjoining house, from Wilma Burke, his sister-in-law. He hopes to conclude the purchase later this year.
