So farewell, Herbert. I’ll never forget the time you saved Ed and I from financial disaster the first year we were in the apple business. We had been cut off by the usual buyer, National Fruit, for protesting the low prices that were being offered that year, when Herbert sent over a buyer from Musselman Fruit, who purchased the crop.

And years later, the time you came over and showed Cory, 'my present husband, and me how you could tell that wheat was ready to harvest; and the time you loaned me burlap sacks to put that wheat in.

You loaned us boxes and apple crates arid ladders, bought our eggs, and let us use your sign post on 522 to advertise our strawberries.

You loved those strawberries, and the land, these happy hills. I wish you well in your new space.

Question: Does Virginia tax Social Security benefits?

Ignoring reality, the Democratic Leadership in the General Assembly * continues to insist that the answer is no! In a March 7, 1993, Richmond Times-Dispatch Op/Ed Page guest column, House Majority Leader C. Richard Cranwell writes; “...I hope once and for all we can lay to rest the misconception that Social Security is taxed in Virginia.”

Let us consider a typical scenario that is happening thousands of times across Virginia during this tax filing season. A simple example, no smoke and mirrors:
