VDOT offers help
for key intersection

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the changes, but the highway department has plans for the intersection of Main and Middle Streets in the middle of Washington.
The intersection, marked by the Post Office, The Inn, and the parking lot for Trinity Church, has been a traffic headache for years, according to Charlie Eldred, who lives at Washington House, on the fourth corner of the intersection.
Louise Van Dort, chairman of the Town Planning Commission, said recently that traffic from the Fodderstack Road often rolls past the Post Office too fast for the trifle congestion there. “Often people will sit out in the street waiting for a parking place to open up in front of the Post Office, blocking traffic the whole time. It’s just a mess there,” she said.
Bob Moore, resident engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has some ideas on how to slow down and improve the traffic at the intersection. *
He readily admits that VDOT itself is part of the problem as its maintenance headquarters for the county is just outside of town on the Fodderstack Road. The large trucks hauling gravel throughout the spring and summer roar through the intersection day after day.
