Ms. Minerva later stops by to pick up her return which has been completed and is told that her 1992 state income tax is $517.
“My Goodness,” says Ms. Minerva, “That is over half of one month’s Social Security check.”
“Uh oh!” exlaims Preparer, “Did you say Social Security?”
“Oh yes,” replies Ms. Minerva, “I received $10,000 in Social Security benefits in 1992. But I thought Social Security is not taxable.”
“Sorry,” mutters Preparer, “but this means that your tax for 1992 is $1,061.”
